Many Christian parents and youth leaders worry about whether the young people in their care will keep the faith. The worry is understandable. Scripture gives us both a calling and a hope.
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6, KJV)
Proverbs describes how things usually go, not a guarantee. Children make their own choices, and some wander before they come home. Yet the verse reminds us that training matters. Training is more than telling. It includes example, practice, correction and encouragement over many years.
Model what you want to pass on
"In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity." (Titus 2:7, KJV)
Young people notice whether our faith is real. Do they see us pray when things are hard? Do they hear us apologise when we are wrong? Do they see us treat others with respect, at home as well as at church?
Make faith part of everyday life
- Pray together at meals and at bedtime, even briefly.
- Talk about what you are reading in the Bible.
- Serve others together as a family or group.
- Share stories of how God has helped you.
Welcome questions
Teenagers often ask hard questions about God, suffering, science, sexuality and other faiths. Do not panic or shut them down. Listen, explore the Bible together, read good books, and be honest when you do not know the answer. A faith that has been questioned and tested is often stronger.
Give responsibility step by step
Growing up means learning to make choices. Give young people real responsibility in the home and in church, with support. Let them lead a prayer, plan an outing, help in a ministry. Mistakes made in a loving setting are part of learning.
Keep the relationship strong
Rules without relationship often lead to rebellion. Spend time together doing things they enjoy. Listen more than you lecture. Let them know that nothing they do will make you stop loving them, just as God's love holds us.
Pray, and trust God
We plant and water; God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6). Pray for the young people in your life by name, and trust Him with what you cannot control.
A step for this week
Plan one hour this week with a young person in your care, doing something they enjoy. Ask one open question: "What is on your mind these days?" Then listen.
