Day 07 of 31

Who Is a Christian?

Thirteen marks of a life with Christ

Today's Scripture

“When he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with the church for a full year, teaching large crowds of people. (It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.)”
Acts 11:26 NLT

Opening thought

The word "Christians" was never used during Jesus' earthly ministry. His followers were called His disciples, which means students (mathētēs in Greek).

The devotional message

The believers were called Christians in Antioch because people saw a transformed set of people whose lives were different from others. It was evident to everyone that they had been with Jesus Christ.

What Christianity Is

Christianity is:

Practical. Your life must show it (1 Peter 2:12).

Personal. A spiritual and physical encounter with Christ (Ezekiel 18:20–24; Revelation 22:12).

A profession of faith (Luke 12:8; Romans 10:8–10).

A personal relationship with God (John 1:12; Romans 8:16–17).

Progressive growth (1 Peter 2:1–2).

A passionate life for God and for others (John 13:34; 1 Peter 3:8).

Prayerful living (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Power (Luke 10:19; 1 Corinthians 2:4).

Perfection (Matthew 5:48; 2 Corinthians 3:18).

Pentecostal experience (Zechariah 4:6; Romans 8:9; Acts 2).

Planting (2 Corinthians 9:6–8; Galatians 6:7; 1 Corinthians 3:1–7).

Peaceful living (Hebrews 12:14).

Prophecy (1 Corinthians 2:9–12, 14).

Closing prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to follow You. Let my life show that I have been with You. Help me to grow day by day: in prayer, in love for You and for others, in peace, and in the power of Your Holy Spirit. Make me a true disciple, a learner at Your feet, so that others may see You in me. In Jesus' name, amen.
